Disconnect or change a custom domain

Last updated 8 May 2026

Disconnect or change a custom domain

You can disconnect your custom domain at any time — your storefront reverts to its OpenChair URL, and you can reconnect later (or switch to a different domain) without losing setup time.

How to disconnect

  1. In OpenChair, open Storefront → Domain.
  2. On the connected domain card, click Disconnect.
  3. Confirm in the dialog.
  4. Done. Status changes to disconnected immediately.

What happens immediately

  • Your storefront is back at https://openchairpro.com/your-slug. The OpenChair URL works as it always did.
  • The custom domain stops serving your storefront. Customers visiting it will see a generic "this domain is not configured" message rather than your booking page.
  • Existing customer bookings are unaffected — bookings live in OpenChair regardless of which URL was used.
  • DNS records at your domain provider stay where they are. If you don't plan to reconnect, you can delete them — but it doesn't matter either way.

What happens after 7 days

We keep your domain configured on our side for 7 days after disconnect. During that window:

  • You can reconnect the same domain in seconds without going through DNS verification again.
  • Your existing SSL certificate is reused.

After 7 days the slot is released. Reconnecting after that is a fresh setup — same flow as the first time.

Switching to a different domain

If you want to move from book.salonsmith.com to salonsmith.com (or to a totally different domain):

  1. Disconnect the current domain.
  2. Connect the new one — see Connect a custom domain.
  3. Add the DNS record for the new domain at your provider.
  4. Verify.

We don't support swapping in one step on purpose. The two-step disconnect-then-connect makes accidents harder.

What to tell customers

If you've been promoting the custom domain (on Instagram, Google Business, business cards), update those before disconnecting where you can. After disconnect:

  • Old SMS / email confirmations — these typically include the OpenChair URL, not the custom domain, so they keep working.
  • Google Business listing — update the website field to your OpenChair URL or the new custom domain.
  • Social media bios — same.
  • Print collateral (cards, flyers) — anything printed with the custom domain is now stale; replace at the next reprint.

When you might want to disconnect

The most common reasons we hear:

  • Renewing the domain at a new registrar — disconnect, transfer, reconnect. Faster than re-pointing DNS at the same provider.
  • Moving back to a separate website — if you decide to use Squarespace/Wix again and just embed booking, see the Embed widget guide.
  • Ending the OpenChair PRO subscription — custom domains are PRO-only, so they auto-disconnect if you downgrade. The grace window means you can resubscribe within 7 days without reconfiguring DNS.

Custom domains and Stripe

Custom domains don't affect payments. Stripe Connect, deposits, and payouts work identically whether your storefront is at the custom domain or the OpenChair URL.

If you've configured Stripe webhook URLs pointing at your storefront, those URLs are unchanged — webhooks are platform-level, not per-storefront.
